Brief

A family that actually cooks — three meals a day, two cooks in the room at once, and a tiffin run every morning.

Constraint

A single window, a beam at 2.1 metres, and a plumbing stack that could not move more than 300mm.

Decisions

  1. 01

    Split the run

Wet work one side, dry and heat the other. It sounds obvious; the previous layout had the sink beside the hob.

  2. 02

Dropped the ceiling only where the beam is

A full false ceiling would have cost 200mm across the whole room. A local drop kept the rest at full height.

  3. 03

Drawers, not shutters, below the counter

More expensive per running foot, and the only decision nobody has questioned since.
